ICSL offers daily instruction in English at all levels for speakers of other languages (EFL) in grades 1 – 11. All students are tested in reading and language use to determine their level of English proficiency during the admissions process. Students in grades K-5 with no previous knowledge of English may apply for admission. Students in grades 6 – 8 must be working in English no more than 3 years behind their grade level. For example, a 7th grade student must be able to accomplish tasks at a 4th grade level or higher. Students in grades 9 – 10 must be working in English no more than 2 grades behind their grade level. Students in grades 11 – 12 must be working at grade level.

Both the elementary and secondary programs aim to assimilate non-English speakers into the regular classroom as rapidly as possible. In the high school, EFL classes count only for elective credit and do not fulfill the English course requirements for graduation. There is an extra charge for EFL students based on how many periods per week they participate in the EFL program.

The ability to communicate effectively in English is a key factor for us at International Christian School, Lima. We understand that the time it takes to learn a language varies between students, and also that students enter into our program at different levels of proficiency. Therefore, students are tested regularly to obtain their proficiency level. The English language range we use here begins at level 1 (beginner) and ends at level 6 (proficient). The goal for all EFL students is to reach level 6 proficiency, which means they have reached an English level comparable to that of their native English-speaking peers. EFL students attend core classes in English; however, the grades they receive are based on their individual English level expectations. The grades they receive on their report cards are indicated as "Modified for EFL" in order to show that their instruction has been modified by the teacher to meet their individual needs. Please refer to the chart below for a brief description of each English level. Please refer to the English Language Acquisition Chart we use for an explanation of your child's English language level. The chart is in both English and Spanish for your convenience.
