CURRICULUM -- English as a Second Language

1 ICSL offers daily instruction in English at all levels for speakers of other language (ESL). In grades 1-6, students who have no previous knowledge of English may apply for admission. Students in grades 7 - 9 must be able to read and understand written English, as well as to write simple sentences. Students in grades 10 - 12 will be interviewed and accepted on an individual basis.

1 Both the elementary and secondary programs aim to assimilate non-English speakers into the regular classroom as rapidly as possible. In the high school, ESL classes count only for elective credit and do not fulfill the English course requirements for graduation. There is an extra charge for ESL students based on how many periods per week they participate in the ESL program.

1The ability to communicate effectively in English is a key factor for us at International Christian School, Lima. We understand that the time it takes to learn a second language varies between students, and also that students enter into our program at different English levels. Therefore, students are tested in the areas of Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking each year to obtain their English level. The English language range we use here begins at Level 1 and ends at Level 6. The goal for all ESL students is to reach level 6, which means they have reached an English level comparable to that of their native English speaking peers. ESL students attend regular education classes in English, however, the grades they receive are based on their individual English level expectations. The grades they receive are marked with an asterick (*) on their report cards in order to show that their instruction has been modified by the teacher in order to meet their individual needs. Please refer to the English Language Acquisition chart we use for an explanation of your child's English language level. The chart is in both English and Spanish for your convenience.
